Received a phone call from legendary surf photographer, Jeremy Koreski, asking if I would come to Tofino to work with SBC Surf and Roxy. I brought to his attention that I’d never shot surfing, but he seemed confident in my abilities. Had the pleasure of working with Roxy surf stars; Catherine Bruhwiler and Hannah Scott. Photographing life as it happens is my favourite way to make images. Capturing these kids enjoying a summer BBQ turned water fight was so much fun – hardly seems possible that this is work.

Spruce Lake

Despite an incredibly busy summer, I managed to sneak away for a four-day MTB trip (all play – no work) to one of my favourite places – the Chilcotins. It was a point-to-point trip starting at Taseko Lake and ending at Tyax Lodge. The pictures are taken at Spruce Lake, where we camped for two nights. Looking at these, you would have thought it was a fishing trip, but I was fascinated by the fishermen. One rider, a pack designer for Dakine, realized that he had only remembered his reel, but had forgotten his fishing rod. He spent the rest of the climb designing a rod that he would piece together at camp.

This double page spread of Gareth Dyer hitting a puddle can be seen in this year’s photo annual from Bike Magazine. The day was cold, rainy and wet – a perfect day to find big puddles. Awful weather can create the most dynamic images. We, the bike-obsessed, ride these conditions – they thrill us and make us feel more alive . So why not go out and capture that?

Deep Summer 2011

Honoured, excited, nervous. That’s what it felt like to say yes to Whistler Blackcomb to join 5 other world-class mountain bike photographers in the 2011 Deep Summer Photography Contest.

The competition demands that photographers work with athletes over three days during Kokanee Crankworx, to capture an edited slideshow that screens the following night before 1300 industry guests. It’s a high-stakes assignment, the “exposure” is great and terrifying – for me, it felt like a good challenge, and a great opportunity to let commercial clients in on what I can produce in three days of shooting.

My passion is documentary. I’m inspired by the people around me, so I chose to focus my show on Ian Ritz, the owner and founder of Chromag Bikes, a deeply bike-obsessed local. He road rides to his office, builds and sells bikes all day, hits the pump track every Tuesday night and tackles big climbs and gnarly decents on his crew’s “Friday rides.” Just a week in the life of a Whistler local.

Thank you to my athletes, the Chromag Crew and pro riders Matt Hunter, Brandon Semenuk, Chris Dewar, Reece Wallace and Jinya Nishiwaki.

Samahquam Reserve

Getting back to my roots of social documentary photography always makes me happy. Spent the day with social worker Kathryn Morgan, in Samahquam Reserve near Pemberton, volunteering to take family photos as a reward for families that participated in the Connect Parenting Group workshop. Here are some of my favourites from spending the day with an incredible community.

Nordica needed some lifestyle content to market their 2012 product. We managed to squeeze in the shoot before winter operations shut down at Whistler Blackcomb. The rain made it difficult to create a winter look, but we managed to get what they needed.

Matchstick Productions

Persistent cloud cover combined with a crew determined to ski lines of Mt. Pylon and Mt. Meager in the sunlight, turned into twenty-six days of patient camping at the Meager Hot Springs. Called in for the last five days, I had two small weather windows to grab some shots. Despite being permanently wrapped in seven layers of down and GORETEX , I was inspired by the performances of skiers Eric Hjorleifson, James Heim and Ingrid Backstrom. Thanks to the MSP crew, Reska and Dustin, helpers Greg & Treat and the invaluable heli pilot Jake in Pemberton’s beautiful bad ass mountains.
